A little bit of housekeeping—first, thank you to everyone who’s sent photos so far! I’m very impressed. Second…I forgot to specify that TNQ is looking for a Canadian photographer—and by Canadian, I mean, a photographer who lives and works in Canada, or was born and raised here but lives in another country…I’m not going to ask for your proof of citizenship or test your knowledge of hockey/ask you to build a birchbark canoe/distinguish Molson Ex from Bud Light in blind taste test. The photo itself need not be of a Canadian setting or person. If you’ve already submitted a photo and are not Canadian by this definition and I end up choosing it, well, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. (Note: it may involve Shania Twain and karaoke…) For those who have yet to enter…please let me know that you’re Canadian so I know you’ve read this!
And lastly—The deadline to submit a photo is Thursday, June 17, at midnight. I have decided to put the results of this call to a vote. On Friday morning, I will narrow it down to three top contenders upon which I’ll ask you to vote by Tuesday, June 22 at midnight. The results will be announced when the issue comes off the press, in July.
The theme of our Summer issue of TNQ is “On the Road,” as it happens that all kinds of travel—plane, bus, automobile and even one (very short) trip via home-made hang-glider are represented in the contents. When I learned of this theme, I thought it would be pretty easy to illustrate. However, right now, the cover is still completely blank, and it needs not to be by next Tuesday. So I’ve been thinking…if I only I could take this problem to a community of writers, artists, and readers who know TNQ and thus have exceptionally good taste—oh wait, I can, that’s you!
If you have the perfect photo, or know someone who might, please give me a shout in the comments or via managing.editor(at)tnq.ca.
Couple things to keep in mind, starting with our specs—we need a minimum of 300 dpi at final size for any image, on the front or inside. (If you’re not sure what this means…please tune in for the post I plan to write on what dpi is and why it matters). The cover photo space of TNQ is 8.125 wide x 6 high (for the front only) or 16.25 x 6 (wrapping front and back). If you have a digital copy of a photo that is not large enough for the cover, but you have the print itself (hard copy), I can scan it for you to the size I need, so long as you’re willing to trust it to Canada Post.
Payment: TNQ pays $250 for a cover image, and the photographer gets a credit in the masthead, a blurb on the inside title page, and a complimentary copy of the issue. We are also in the habit of printing extra covers, and the photographer can have a few of these for his or her portfolio.
In the meantime, I have to keep looking, just in case, but note: if you hook me up with a photo (and are not, yourself, the photographer) there will be a reward of some kind.

Hi,
I have a couple of images that I think might be suitable – I read about your ‘dilemma’ on Rebecca Roseblum’s blog – who should I send jpgs to?
